The bicycle industry in Germany, the Netherlands, and France is showing signs of recovery after several years of difficulties, including overproduction, inventory challenges, and the influx of illegal electric bicycles from China. According to a semi-annual report released by the German cycling industry association ZIV on September 7, the German bicycle market grew by 10% compared to the same period last year, with electric bicycles seeing a 2% increase in sales. Overall bicycle production rose by 6%, and electric models increased by 4% compared to 2025. Exports also grew by more than 6%, and much of the excess inventory that had built up in recent years has now been sold.
ZIV’s general director, Burkhard Stork, said that while the industry has passed its lowest point and is now stable, the association remains cautious, calling the recovery "slow." He noted that the positive trend is encouraging, with more people using bicycles and electric bikes, and the market showing long-term stability. However, the industry is still navigating a period of gradual improvement rather than a rapid rebound.
In the Netherlands, the cycling sector reported an 8.6% increase in revenue for the first half of the year, according to the H&L Benchmark barometer, with a particularly strong second quarter driving the growth. In France, the industry is also performing well, with workshops operating at full capacity. Stork mentioned that gravel bikes—designed for off-road and mixed terrain—are becoming more popular in the mid-range and entry-level segments. Sales of basic hardtail mountain bikes have also seen a slight rise. Meanwhile, after-sales services are busy, with strong demand for replacement parts and accessories. However, a shortage of skilled workers continues to be a major issue, as the need for repairs and maintenance remains high.
Europe’s hot summer, with ideal cycling weather except during heatwaves, may have contributed to the increased demand for bicycles. However, it is still unclear whether this trend will continue as weather patterns shift and as the seasons change. The industry is cautiously optimistic but remains prepared for potential fluctuations in the market.
