Exhibition celebrates 200 years of photography

An exhibition marking 200 years of photographic history is currently open at the Melun Museum of Arts and History in Melun, Seine-et-Marne. Visitors can explore a curated collection of photographs from 1840 to 1914, showcasing the evolution of the medium during its formative years.

Exhibition runs through December

The exhibition is part of a nationwide bicentenary celebration of photography, which began in September 2026 and will conclude on September 30, 2027. In Melun, the event will remain open until December 20, giving visitors more time to experience the collection.

Public invited to submit work

The city of Melun has invited the public to submit their own photographic works for potential inclusion in the exhibition. Submissions are due by October 30, and a winner will be announced on November 16. Their photographs will then be displayed alongside the historical collection.

National bicentenary event underway

The bicentenary of photography was launched by the French Ministry of Culture and is being celebrated across the country. This initiative aims to highlight the significance of photography in French cultural history and its ongoing development.

Future exhibition explores digital age

In early March, another exhibition titled 200 after... What is photography? will open at the Espace Saint-Jean in Melun. This exhibition will reflect on the past two centuries of photography and examine its current evolution, particularly in the digital age.

Exhibition aims to question photography’s future

According to Ophélie Sureau, director of Espace Saint-Jean, the exhibition will not present a contrast between past and present photography but will instead explore the history of the medium and raise questions about its future, especially with the rise of artificial intelligence.
