In the investigation into the February 2026 death of far-right activist Quentin Deranque, three of five individuals placed under judicial examination on September 24 were placed in provisional detention, while the other two received judicial supervision, according to Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran. The five individuals were examined for "participation in a criminal association for the preparation of a crime." Four of them were also charged with "aggravated violence," which includes the use or threat of a weapon, acting in a group, and concealing parts of the face. A 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were placed in custody. The lawyer of the 26-year-old man, Me Anne-Laure Lebert, told AFP that her client was not being prosecuted for acts related to Quentin Deranque, but for actions taken during confrontations between ultra-left activists, a group he is part of, and those close to Deranque. Meanwhile, the lawyer of the 24-year-old woman, Me Amandine Fabregue, criticized the decision to place her under custody, calling it "completely disproportionate" given the alleged facts and the profile of her client. On February 12, Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old far-right activist based in Lyon, was present with members of the identitarian group Némésis during a demonstration against a conference by LFI eurodeputy Rima Hassan at Sciences Po Lyon. Nearby were ultra-left activists, including members of the dissolved anti-fascist group La Jeune Garde, founded in 2018 by Raphaël Arnault. The two groups clashed, and Deranque was isolated and found on the ground. He was then beaten by individuals wearing hoods, as shown in videos of the incident. Deranque later died from severe head trauma and was declared dead two days later. The incident sparked strong public reactions, including a minute of silence in the National Assembly on February 17, followed by a far-right gathering in Lyon four days later to commemorate Deranque. Since the incident, 14 people have been placed under judicial examination. Among them are Jacques-Élie Favrot, the parliamentary assistant to LFI deputy Raphaël Arnault, and Adrian B., a member of La Jeune Garde close to the LFI official.
