Philips Hue, a leading name in smart lighting, has unveiled several new products and features at the IFA tech show in Berlin. Among the highlights is a more affordable version of its Sync Box, which now supports 4K resolution and is priced at $150. This is a significant drop from the $385 8K model. The new 4K Sync Box allows users to synchronize a single light with their TV using Bluetooth, eliminating the need for a Philips Hue Bridge. Additionally, the company introduced the Play Screen Sync, its first camera-based synchronization solution, priced at $119.99. Both products were showcased at the event and are now available for purchase.
These synchronization systems work by connecting to Philips Hue’s color-changing lights, allowing them to move in time with content displayed on the TV. This includes everything from movies and games to live news broadcasts. The Sync Box models use an HDMI connection to pull visuals from any device connected to the TV, such as a streaming box or gaming console. In contrast, the Play Screen Sync uses a fisheye camera to monitor what is happening on the TV screen, enabling synchronization regardless of the source. This innovation solves a previous issue where synchronization was limited to HDMI inputs.
Philips Hue also introduced a feature called Custom AI Behaviors, which lets users describe lighting automations using natural language instead of manually setting them up in the app. This builds on an existing AI assistant within the Philips Hue app that allows users to describe lighting scenes using text or voice commands. The new feature aims to make complex lighting setups more user-friendly and accessible to a broader audience.
In addition to new features, Philips Hue announced several third-party collaborations. These include a rumored integration with Nanoleaf Shapes lights and a partnership with Sonos, which will allow users to control Sonos speakers using selected Hue switches. The company also introduced new smart lighting products such as Festavia curtain, net, and icicle lights, the Philips Hue Liane 360-degree rope light, and the OmniGlow outdoor strip light. The OmniGlow technology uses densely packed LEDs to create smooth color gradients without visible gaps. This marks the first time the technology has been available for outdoor use.
