Victor Wembanyama, a prominent player for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, has expressed his support for a student-led movement in France. Following a preseason game, Wembanyama commented on the growing attention given to high school students and young people in the country, saying, "I am happy that the high school students and the young people in general are being heard. I hear them and I support them. I hope that the people up there will do the same." His remarks highlighted his solidarity with the youth movement, which has been advocating for various social and educational reforms. Bally Bakayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis in the Seine-Saint-Denis department and a member of the Leftist Front (LFI) party, acknowledged Wembanyama’s comments on the social media platform X. He wrote, "Thank you Victor Wembanyama. Artists, athletes, influencers: your visibility is a responsibility. The youth is rising, give it echo." His message emphasized the importance of public figures amplifying the voices of young people. In response, Wembanyama used a colloquial expression in his reply, saying, "De rien Bally t’es un bon wlh," which is an abbreviation of the Arabic phrase "wallah," commonly used to express sincerity or affirmation. This exchange underscored the personal connection between the athlete and the mayor, as well as the broader support for the youth movement. During the night of Thursday to Friday, Wembanyama expanded on his comments in a press interview. He reflected on his own experiences as a high school student, noting, "What touches me is that it is not something completely unknown to me. I was in high school in Nanterre, which was already a bastion of blockades at the time. Not so long ago, I was a high school student." His insights provided a personal perspective on the current movement, linking it to his own past and the challenges faced by students in France.
