Donovan, a resident of Tournai, Belgium, has been using an electric vehicle (VE) since 2023. He chose the Nissan Leaf 2 with a 40 kWh battery, which he found to be well-suited for his daily driving needs, allowing him to cover approximately 30,000 km per year. He noted that this model helped reduce his annual circulation tax to 100 euros, compared to 400 euros for a comparable thermal vehicle. He also highlighted the low maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles.
Donovan purchased the Nissan Leaf 2 for around 17,000 euros, slightly over his initial budget of 15,000 euros. The vehicle, a 2018 model with 50,000 km on the odometer, has a black finish and N-Connecta trim. He mentioned that the 40 kWh battery is sufficient for his daily commute, which includes about 80 km to work and additional trips, totaling around 160 km per day, with 20% of the battery still remaining.
He acknowledged that the Leaf's battery capacity may not be suitable for those who drive longer distances, such as commercial drivers who might require a 90 or 100 kWh battery. However, he noted that with technological advancements, the efficiency of electric vehicles has improved, and newer models like the Peugeot e-208 offer similar energy consumption with larger batteries.
Donovan's home is equipped with solar panels and a triphased electrical system, allowing him to recharge his vehicle at home using a Tesla 22 kW AC charger. However, the vehicle's onboard charger limits the charging power to around 4.4 kW. His solar installation has a peak power of 10 kW and produced 7,482 kWh over the past year, contributing to his vehicle's low operating costs. He estimates that he saves between 1,500 and 2,500 euros annually compared to a thermal vehicle, primarily due to the solar installation.
The Nissan Leaf 2 has accumulated 151,000 km over three years of use and is expected to last until it reaches 300,000 km. Donovan has only needed to replace the 12V battery and four tires, with no major issues. He performs most of the maintenance himself, as he works as a test technician at Aisin Europe.
He noted that while the Nissan Leaf 2 is not widely available in Belgium or France, it is more common in other European countries like the UK. He has found online resources and DIY solutions to address maintenance issues, such as repairing the charging connector using 3D printing.
Donovan observes that many people are becoming more interested in electric vehicles, with some of his colleagues now using hybrid or electric models. However, he also acknowledges that some users have experienced issues with battery modules, which he considers a risk.
He is considering a Tesla Model 3 for his wife, but he plans to wait until its price drops below 20,000 euros. He emphasizes the financial benefits of electric vehicles, including savings on fuel and maintenance, and the convenience of home charging.
