South Africa raises 2026/27 tax revenue forecast by 17.1 billion rand, citing higher commodity prices and improved tax collections.
Revised tax revenue forecast
South Africa has updated its financial plans for the 2026/2027 fiscal year, raising its estimate for total tax income by 17.1 billion rand to 2144 billion rand, up from the original 2127 billion rand. This change was announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana and is due to higher-than-expected tax collections from businesses, dividends, and value-added tax.Reason for the revision
The increase in tax revenue is partly due to higher prices for commodities such as gold and platinum, which are major exports for South Africa. However, these benefits are expected to decrease over time as global market conditions change and the effects of higher prices wear off.Tax revenue performance
According to the South African Revenue Service (SARS), total tax income for the 2025/2026 period reached 2010.3 billion rand, showing an 8.4 percent increase compared to the previous year. In the first half of the 2026/2027 period, tax income was 992.2 billion rand as of September 30, 2026, which is 67.4 billion rand more than the same period in the previous year.Government efforts to improve trade
The government is focusing on improving customs processes, including better tracking of goods, more thorough inspections, and stronger enforcement against the illegal trade of alcohol and tobacco. These measures aim to increase tax revenue and reduce the flow of illegal products.Economic growth outlook
South Africa's economy is expected to grow by 1.2 percent in 2026, slightly below the earlier forecast of 1.6 percent from February 2026. The government has also lowered its budget deficit forecast to 3.9 percent of GDP from 4 percent, as part of its medium-term budget plan announced in October.Persistent economic challenges
Despite the improved tax forecasts, South Africa's economy still faces challenges such as logistical problems and inadequate infrastructure, which continue to affect overall economic performance and growth potential.
