Chad works on AI strategy

Chad has begun the pre-validation phase of its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, which will cover the years 2026 to 2030. This strategy aims to guide the country in developing and using AI technology responsibly.

Experts and officials gather

A workshop was held on October 8, bringing together government officials, national institutions, and experts to review the strategy. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) supported the event.

Focus on national needs

The strategy is designed to reflect Chad’s specific needs and capabilities, rather than copying models from more technologically advanced countries. Ethical considerations and the protection of citizens' rights are central to the plan.

Data governance already validated

Before this AI strategy, Chad completed the technical validation of its National Data Governance Strategy. This strategy aims to regulate how data is created, managed, shared, protected, and used across the country.

Challenges identified

A recent assessment by UNECA found that Chad’s data governance maturity is at 30.27%, according to the African Union's self-assessment tool. The evaluation highlighted weaknesses in laws, coordination, system compatibility, and specialized skills.

Next steps for the strategy

The final AI strategy will need to outline priorities, target sectors, resources, and a timeline for implementation. It will be submitted to the government after incorporating feedback from the workshop.
