Three people were killed in Pakistani airstrikes in northeastern Afghanistan, according to Afghan officials, potentially reigniting tensions between the two nations after nearly three months of relative calm. The conflict between the former allies has persisted since February, when they experienced their most intense fighting in years. At the center of the dispute is the issue of militancy in Pakistan, with Islamabad accusing Afghanistan of harboring insurgents who conduct attacks across the border. The Afghan Taliban government denies these claims, stating that militancy is an internal issue for Pakistan. The airstrikes occurred just days after an attack on a police facility in northwestern Pakistan, which resulted in at least 31 deaths. Taliban deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat stated that the Pakistani strikes hit at least one house in Kunar province, killing three members of the same family and injuring four. He also mentioned that in Barmal district of Paktika, two locations were bombarded, destroying one shop and one unoccupied house, with no casualties reported. Pakistan's military did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the airstrikes. Tensions between the two countries have escalated in recent months. In July, Afghanistan launched drones toward Pakistan, which Islamabad said its forces successfully intercepted and shot down. The worst single incident occurred in March, when a Pakistani airstrike on Kabul killed more than 400 people. The Afghan Taliban claimed the attack targeted a drug rehabilitation center, though Islamabad denied this, stating it "precisely targeted military installations and terrorist support infrastructure." According to data from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, Pakistan has a formidable air force with 422 combat aircraft and over 260 helicopters. Afghanistan lacks fighter jets but maintains at least six aircraft, 23 helicopters, and drones previously used in clashes with Pakistan. This disparity in military capabilities underscores the potential for further escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two neighboring countries.
