Researchers from Coveron and NordLayer Intelligence have uncovered synthetic "digital Frankenstein" identities being sold on the dark web for about $200. These identities are created by combining stolen personal data with AI-generated names, deepfake selfies, and cloned voices. The goal is to bypass know-your-customer (KYC) checks, which are procedures used by banks and financial services to verify a person's identity. These synthetic identities are designed to trick automated verification systems and can be used to open fraudulent accounts on banks, cryptocurrency exchanges, and other online services.
The researchers analyzed 362,000 posts from dark web forums and Telegram channels, focusing on 22 specific topics related to identity fraud, deepfake technology, and synthetic identity creation. They found a sharp rise in discussions about synthetic identities. In the first quarter of 2024, there were around 40 posts per month about deepfakes, but by the second quarter of 2026, this number had jumped to 307 per month—an eightfold increase. The growth was not constant; the number of posts remained relatively low in 2025 before surging to an average of 255 per month in 2026.
In the past year alone, over 10,000 posts on the dark web offered full synthetic identity packages, including deepfake selfies and matching documents, for about $200. Criminals can also buy individual components, such as a deepfake image or a cloned voice, for as little as $10. This affordability and availability make it easier for fraudsters to create convincing fake identities, increasing the risk of identity theft and financial fraud.
To combat this growing threat, individuals are advised to monitor their personal information and take action if a data breach is detected. If someone is not applying for new accounts, they may consider freezing their credit to prevent unauthorized access. Users should also be cautious of unusual identity verification requests. Businesses, on the other hand, are encouraged to use layered verification systems and invest in identity theft protection services to improve security and reduce the risk of fraud.
