Bolloré SE, a French multinational company, has officially stopped production of its Bluebus electric buses at its facility in Ergué-Gabéric, Finistère, France. This decision will result in the loss of 115 jobs across Bluebus and its sister company, Blue Solutions. The move comes in response to a slower-than-expected French market, fierce competition, and pressure to lower prices. Bolloré concluded that Bluebus is too small to effectively compete in the growing electric bus industry.
The company said that the current conditions for continuing sustainable production are no longer viable, though some operations might continue. A potential partial acquisition of Bluebus's assets by an unnamed European industrial partner is being explored, focusing on research and development. Employee representatives are expected to receive a formal proposal soon. If this goes ahead, it could preserve 17 jobs, primarily in R&D. Bolloré also plans to keep a smaller team to handle after-sales support and monitoring of the electric buses already in use.
To date, nearly 700 Bluebus electric buses—ranging in size from 6 to 12 meters—have been deployed across France and Europe. Ile-de-France Mobilités, one of the company’s largest clients, has asked for reassurances about the ongoing support and maintenance of the 320 buses it purchased for the Île-de-France region. This is crucial to ensure the continued operation of public transport services relying on these vehicles.
The restructuring also affects Blue Solutions, which develops lithium-metal-polymer (LMP) batteries used in the buses. The company has announced plans to cut 41 more jobs, citing challenges in the European battery and automotive sectors. Despite these reductions, Blue Solutions aims to continue developing its fourth generation of batteries. The staff cuts are intended to help accelerate the industrialization of this new battery technology with the support of an investing partner.
