Users of public transport in Île-de-France have been confused by recent changes to pricing and ticketing systems. Journalist François Camé recently shared on social media that he was fined 70 euros after trying to validate a trip using a Navigo Easy card loaded with metro tickets. He was told he needed two separate tickets—one for the bus and one for the metro—despite the metro ticket costing more (2.55 euros) than the bus ticket (2.05 euros). Some users found this pricing difference illogical and confusing. The changes in pricing and ticketing have particularly affected occasional users, especially since the start of the pandemic, which saw an increase in remote work and cycling. Many users now rely less on public transport but still face confusion when they do use it. One user noted that they have taken to using a bike more often, but when they do need to use public transport, the system feels overly complicated. Greg, an online user, pointed out that the Navigo Easy card, which allows the purchase of tickets for different transport modes individually, does not always work as expected. If the card already has metro tickets, users cannot use the bus tickets, and vice versa. IDFM, the transport authority, acknowledges this issue and suggests purchasing two separate passes for each trip. However, it is easier to load "Metro-Train-RER" and "Bus-Tram" tickets on the same card without problems. Magali, another user, explained that she cannot make transfers between her bus and the RER using the Navigo Easy pass. As a result, she has to pay twice for her journey, which she finds inconvenient. IDFM recommends the Navigo Liberté + pass for such cases, which allows transfers between different transport modes and is available as a physical card or through a phone app. However, some users, like one mother who occasionally takes the bus with her children, have found that they cannot use their current passes to pay for their children’s tickets. IDFM explained this is due to anti-fraud measures, which cost them 700 million euros annually. In such cases, they recommend purchasing separate Navigo Liberté + or Navigo Easy passes for each person. Valo expressed frustration over the inability to buy tickets from bus drivers, a practice that was stopped during the pandemic for sanitary reasons and later continued to reduce drivers’ workloads. Alternatives include reloading the Navigo Easy card through the IDF Mobilités app, purchasing tickets via SMS, or using credit card payments across the entire Île-de-France bus network.
