In the small commune of Saint-Seurin-sur-l’Isle in Gironde, a creative project has shown that rural areas can be rich with connection and community. Radio Label Verte, a local radio station, launched a podcast titled A few steps from you to connect the Jean de La Fontaine elementary school with the Ehpad Jacqueline Auriol, a nursing home for the elderly. Though separated by just a road, the two institutions represent very different parts of the community: one filled with young students and the other with older residents and staff. Through the podcast, children in CE2/CM1 classes recorded messages about their lives, hobbies, and families, while the nursing home residents and staff shared their own stories and answered the children’s questions. The project also included exchanges of photos, letters, and drawings, creating a rich tapestry of shared experiences. The initiative began with 44 participants directly involved in the correspondence, and it indirectly reached around 200 people, including families and professionals from both the school and the nursing home. Anne-Sophie Conan, who started the project, explained that it was in line with Radio Label Verte’s mission to connect people in the local area. The podcast transformed the school and the nursing home from just buildings into places with real people, voices, and stories. By listening to each other’s experiences, the participants built bridges between generations and created a sense of shared community. The podcast was more than just a way to listen—it became a platform for meaningful exchange. The project originally focused on the theme of autonomy, exploring how children gain independence while elderly individuals may experience a loss of it. However, as the project continued, new and unexpected stories emerged. The children’s questions, which sometimes touched on topics like school challenges or family issues, and the emotional bonds formed between the children and the nursing home residents and staff, added depth to the initiative. Anne-Sophie Conan had initially worried that the children might not have much to share, but the project proved to be full of rich and meaningful interactions. Radio Label Verte is continuing its work with new projects, including a podcast series about living things and nature, and a festival called SON Territoires #2, set to take place from 9 to 14 November 2026. The festival will explore how local media can bring people together, share stories, and support local democracy. The A few steps from you project is just one example of how creative local initiatives can bring people closer, even in small communities.
