The Nintendo Switch 2, a hybrid gaming console that allows users to play both on a television and as a handheld device, is being updated in Europe to meet new regulations. These rules, set by the European Union, require that portable devices have batteries that are easy for users to replace without needing special tools or professional help. The original Switch 2, released in June 2025, did not meet these requirements, prompting Nintendo to revise the design of the console. A popular tech channel called Nintenduo obtained a sample of the updated version and shared details about the changes. In a video published on September 4, 2026, Nintenduo demonstrated how the new battery can be replaced. Previously, the process was described as complicated, but now it only requires removing six screws—two on each side and two along the bottom of the console. With a simple screwdriver, users can open the back cover and access the battery, which is labeled "Nintendo" and shaped like a large black block. Nintendo plans to sell replacement batteries through its official store, though the price has not been announced yet. According to Nintendo’s support site, the revised Switch 2 will begin to appear in stores starting in the summer of 2026, with more models rolling out through the fall, winter, and early 2027. However, due to logistical and regulatory challenges, the modified consoles might not be available at the same time in all European countries. The updated Joy-Con controllers are already on sale, while the revised Switch 2 console itself is expected to be available in the fall. Additional accessories, such as the Joy-Con 2 and the Pro Controller, will be released during the winter. The new battery in the Switch 2 has a slightly smaller capacity, dropping from 5,220 mAh to 5,172 mAh—a decrease of about 1%. This minor reduction is unlikely to significantly affect the console’s performance, with only a few extra minutes of reduced battery life. The Pro Controller’s battery will see a more noticeable drop of 16%. Additionally, the Switch 2 itself will be slightly heavier, weighing 411 grams compared to the previous model’s 401 grams. When paired with the Joy-Con 2, the total weight will increase from 534 grams to 548 grams.
