Dario Amodei, the chief executive of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, was the subject of a satirical sketch on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. The segment, introduced by Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update host Michael Che, portrayed Amodei as struggling through a press tour, where he seemed to agree with a former employee's claim that AI could pose a threat to humanity. Cast member Jane Wickline performed the impression, sporting an elaborate wig and delivering hesitant responses that at times turned into dramatic, Gollum-style dialogues with her "dark side." At one point, Wickline-as-Amodei said, "AI is the devil and I its maker." She also assured the audience that AI executives "are all on the same page here: We do not condone what we are doing." The fictional Amodei described AI as "a tool for building weapons" and urged the audience to "urge me to stop." When asked about the potential benefits of AI, such as curing cancer, the character said, "Put it this way: In 10 years, there's about a 10% chance that cancer won't be a problem for anyone." The sketch highlighted the growing public and political debate over the risks and ethical concerns associated with AI development. Amodei is also set to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House later tonight, according to Axios, which first reported the news. This will be the first one-on-one meeting between the two men, who have recently been on opposite sides of the AI safety debate. Amodei has advocated for slowing down AI development or proceeding with greater caution, while Trump has claimed, without evidence, that the concerns about AI are a Democratic hoax. Trump has also expressed a desire to rebrand the technology as "super intelligence." The relationship between Amodei and Trump's administration has been complex. Earlier this year, the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk in response to the company's attempt to impose restrictions on its technology. Anthropic has since challenged this designation in court. Meanwhile, some other administration officials have been more receptive to the company. As the debate over AI's future continues, the meeting between Amodei and Trump could signal a new phase in the dialogue between industry leaders and government officials.
