Apple releases final Xcode 27.1 update

Apple has made the final version of Xcode 27.1 available on the Mac App Store. This update provides developers with the tools needed to create applications for the upcoming iPhone Duo, which is set to launch on October 23.

New simulator for iPhone Duo testing

The update includes a simulator that mimics the different configurations of the iPhone Duo. This allows developers to test how apps behave when the device is open, closed, or partially folded in various orientations. The simulator runs within Device Hub, a tool in Xcode that manages both virtual and physical devices.

Development timeline and parallel updates

The release of Xcode 27.1 came nearly a month after the first beta was shared on September 18. Developers had previously found that adapting apps for the iPhone Duo required more effort than expected, especially for those using Apple's native technologies. Apple developed Xcode 27.1 alongside Xcode 27.2, whose beta versions are still being updated.

Limitations and alternative tools

The simulator in Xcode 27.1 includes the iOS 27.1 SDK and Swift 6.4 but has some limitations, particularly in handling photo and video functions. The Bitrig application offers a more advanced alternative, capable of using the Mac's camera or that of a connected iPhone. Bitrig provides a more sophisticated iPhone Duo simulator than Apple's.

App Store readiness and future requirements

The final version of Xcode 27.1 allows developers to prepare apps for the iPhone Duo intended for distribution on the App Store. Apple has accepted apps built with Xcode 27.1 since October 5, when the release candidate was already available. Developers can now submit their optimized apps for the iPhone Duo or offer them for testing via TestFlight.

Future compliance and system requirements

Apple notes that starting in April 2027, apps using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later will need to include screenshots adapted to the iPhone Duo. Xcode 27.1 requires at least macOS Tahoe 26.6 and a Mac with an Apple M1 chip. The update also includes bug fixes and stability improvements, arriving a week before the iPhone Duo's release to give developers time to refine their apps.
