Interpol has launched a new tool to help law enforcement agencies track and recover hidden criminal assets. Known as the "Silver Notice," this system allows the organization’s 196 member countries to share information and assist each other in locating illicit wealth, such as cash, cryptocurrency, vehicles, real estate, and other valuable assets. Criminals have historically managed to keep about 99% of their illegal earnings out of reach, but Interpol says this new system, tested since January 2025, aims to change that by improving the ability of police forces to trace and seize these assets.
Nicholas Court, director of task force coordination at Interpol, reported that 82 countries using the Silver Notice have already uncovered at least €36 million ($41 million) in criminal assets. Court hopes this number will grow significantly over time, helping to remove more money from criminals by enabling countries to locate where they have hidden their illegal wealth. The tool allows law enforcement officials to send requests to other countries, asking for information about a criminal’s assets, including cars, boats, cash, and even livestock.
In one of the first cases, Italy used the Silver Notice to track assets belonging to a high-ranking member of the mafia. Italy suspected the criminal had significant wealth, but most of it was not located within the country. Brazil responded to the notice and identified assets linked to the criminal and their associates, including property, apartments, and livestock. Now, Brazil and Italy are working together to return the assets to Italy.
The full adoption of the Silver Notice is expected to be approved by member nations at Interpol’s general assembly, which will be held in Hong Kong in November. This notice is the first new color-coded alert introduced by Interpol in at least 20 years. The well-known "Red Notice," used to track individuals suspected of serious crimes, is another example of such alerts. With the Silver Notice, Interpol is expanding its capabilities to target the financial side of organized crime more effectively.
