Cooler and wetter weather is expected to sweep across the UK this week after a recent heatwave that saw temperatures in south-east England reach nearly 29°C (84°F) on Sunday. The change in weather is being driven by low-pressure systems, which are bringing wind and rain, particularly to the northern regions at the start of the week. By Wednesday and Thursday, the weather is expected to settle into a more typical pattern with drier conditions. This follows a week that was the wettest in England since early February, according to the Environment Agency. Meanwhile, in Spain, temperatures reached a high of 45.7°C in Huelva, making it the hottest recorded temperature in the country so far this year. Cooling conditions are forecast to begin on Monday, as a weather front moves in from the north-west. This front will bring a mix of cloud and light showers across England and Wales, with some sunny spells following. Temperatures in south-east England will peak at around 25°C. In Northern Ireland and Scotland, a band of heavier rain will develop on Monday morning, accompanied by strong southwesterly winds. This rain is expected to keep temperatures lower, around 17°C, in these areas. While the northern regions are accustomed to strong winds, there is a chance of disruption if the winds funnel through central areas like the lowlands. On Tuesday, a deep area of low pressure will remain near the north-west of Scotland, bringing gusts of up to 60 mph in northern and western Scotland. These areas are used to such conditions, but the winds may cause some local disruption if they affect more populated regions. Meanwhile, further south, light rain is expected to linger in the southeast of England during the morning before clearing. Much of England and all of Wales are still experiencing drought conditions, so the rain, though light, is welcome. By Wednesday, the low-pressure system will move into the North Sea, bringing windy conditions to the east coast for a short time. However, rising pressure will lead to a drier and sunnier midweek for most of the UK, with lighter winds. Showers are likely to return to the western parts of the UK on Thursday but will gradually move eastward and fade by Friday. Temperatures during the week will be close to the seasonal average, with the highest temperatures in the south-east reaching around 22°C.
