Ukraine's national motorsport organization, the Federation of Automobile Racing of Ukraine (FAU), has asked FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to take action against Russia's automobile federation (RAF) for setting up offices in areas of Ukraine that are currently occupied by Russian forces. These areas include Crimea, Sevastopol, and parts of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia, which the United Nations recognizes as Ukrainian territory. The FAU is urging the FIA to impose sanctions on the RAF, arguing that the presence of Russian motorsport offices in these regions violates international norms and undermines the integrity of the sport. This request comes after the FIA lifted a ban on Russian and Belarusian competitors in motorsport in August 2023. The FAU criticized the FIA for its "prolonged inaction" on the issue, noting that it had previously reached out to the FIA's senate and ethics committee without receiving a response. In addition, the FAU has filed a case with the FIA's international court of appeal. FAU President Oleksander Feldman has written to Ben Sulayem, demanding that Russia's membership be suspended, that restrictions on Russian athletes be reinstated, and that the FIA issue a public statement condemning the "forcible redistribution of sporting authority." Ukraine's Minister for Youth and Sport, Matvii Bidnyi, recently criticized the FIA for lifting the ban on Russian competitors, stating that the original reasons for the ban—Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Belarus's military support—had not disappeared. In fact, Bidnyi claimed the situation had worsened, with Russia continuing its aggression. This decision by the FIA followed a similar move by the International Olympic Committee to lift its own ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes. However, other sports organizations, like World Athletics, have not yet lifted their bans. The Russian Embassy in London has responded to the issue by stating that excluding Russian athletes from international competitions is discriminatory and violates the principles of the Olympic Charter. The Embassy praised the FIA's decision to lift the restrictions, calling it a positive step toward reducing political bias in sports. The FIA has not yet commented on the situation.
