Netflix has unveiled the first images from its upcoming adaptation of Quasimodo, with Vincent Cassel set to portray the iconic character. The streaming platform shared exclusive photos of the four main characters on Friday, September 25. The film, scheduled for release on Netflix on November 27, 2026, reimagines the life of the figure who inspired Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell-ringer from Victor Hugo’s classic novel Notre-Dame de Paris. The story is set during the July Revolution of 1830 in Paris, a time of political upheaval and a cholera outbreak, and explores themes of rebellion and forbidden love.
The film's cast includes Karim Leklou, Daphné Patakia, and Benjamin Voisin. According to Netflix, the project aims to highlight the personal stories behind grand historical narratives, stating, “Behind every great fresco there is a small story.” Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film is based on a screenplay by Eric Besnard and Edgar Marie. This adaptation marks more than 25 years since Victor Hugo’s novel was last brought to the big screen.
Previous adaptations of Notre-Dame de Paris include Disney’s animated The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and the comedy Quasimodo d'El Paris by Patrick Timsit. A television series featuring Mandy Patinkin as Quasimodo and Salma Hayek as Esmeralda also aired in 1997. This is not the first time Jean-François Richet has worked with Vincent Cassel; the two previously collaborated on L'Empereur de Paris (2018), a film about the French police chief François Vidocq, and on the biopic L'Instinct de mort and L'Ennemi public n°1, which chronicled the life of the infamous criminal Jacques Mesrine.
Vincent Cassel continues to take on roles in historical dramas, having previously played the Musketeer Athos in The Three Musketeers films directed by Martin Bourboulon. He will also appear in a film about Alexandre Dumas, directed by Ladj Ly. This new project adds to his growing repertoire of period pieces, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
