The ninth edition of European Work in Progress (EWIP), held from 28 to 30 September in Hamburg, celebrated films in the final stages of production or post-production across various genres. The event, which took place for the second year in a row as part of the FilmFest Hamburg Industry Days, brought together filmmakers, producers, distributors, and other industry professionals. The awards offered support for post-production, sound, colour grading, marketing, subtitling, and costumes, helping filmmakers bring their projects to completion.
An international jury of industry experts selected the winners, including Christian Bräuer from Yorck Kinogruppe, Paolo Bertolin from the Venice Film Festival, and Rebecca De Pas from the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The jury evaluated entries based on their artistic merit, technical quality, and potential impact.
The Post Republic Award, worth €30,000 in post-production services, was given to Folk Play by Serbian director Mirjana Karanović. The jury praised the film as an intimate portrayal of a young woman’s awakening through an unexpected meeting, highlighting its fresh take on female character representation.
Other notable winners included Eka by Indian director Suman Sen, which received a €10,000 voucher for Dolby Atmos mixing, and Karmic Knot by Latvian filmmaker Signe Baumane, which received €5,000 for professional dubbing. Spross by German director Friederike Güssefeld won the Loft Tonstudios Award for sound post-production, while La Unión by Spanish-Colombian director Cordelia Alegre received the Optical Arts Award for colour grading. The event also recognized films for their sound design, marketing, subtitling, and costume work, reflecting a broad range of cinematic talents and approaches.
European Work in Progress is organized in partnership with FilmFest Hamburg and MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, with support from Creative Europe – MEDIA. The full list of award winners includes Folk Play, Eka, Karmic Knot, Spross, La Unión, Witch, Panna Sophia/Comenius, A House on the Waves, Don’t Be a Stranger, and Mother of Sugar, each receiving recognition and financial support to aid their development and distribution.
