Algerian authorities are working to boost the country's digital infrastructure to support socio-economic development, with a special emphasis on the tourism industry. The government is preparing to launch a digital platform aimed at promoting Algeria’s tourist attractions to both local and international visitors. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to increase tourism, with a target of welcoming an additional 4.5 million tourists between 2025 and 2029. Discussions are underway between the Ministry of Tourism and Handicraft and the Italian company Ck Cooperation S.r.l. about the platform. According to the Algeria Press Agency (APS), a technical meeting was held on Saturday, October 3, to explore how best to showcase Algeria’s tourist resources using this digital tool. The Ministry of Tourism and Handicraft is also developing an online booking system that connects public and private hotels to make accommodation more accessible. It is also working to digitize procedures for hotels, travel agencies, artisans, and tour guides. In 2026, the ministry began modernizing its digital platform, including updating websites for tourism departments in the wilayas and the Algeria Tours application. The system is also being updated to include the national identification number and a method to track tourism activities. Cultural and historical sites are also being enhanced with digital tools. The Discover Algeria application, launched in 2025 by the Ministry of Culture and Arts, allows users to explore cultural and archaeological sites through interactive maps and digital content. This application aims to make Algeria’s heritage more accessible and engaging for visitors. Algerian authorities aim to attract 8 million tourists by 2029, up from more than 3.5 million in 2025. The Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI) predicts that domestic and international tourism demand will reach about 11 million visitors in 2030 and 14 million in 2035. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the travel and tourism sector contributed 5.2 percent of Algeria’s GDP in 2019 and 5.6 percent in 2025, totaling 16 billion dollars. This is expected to rise to 5.7 percent in 2026 and 5.9 percent in 2036, reaching 21 billion dollars. Tourism spending is also on the rise. In 2025, international visitors spent 202.6 million dollars in Algeria, compared to 13.1 billion dollars from domestic tourists. International spending is projected to reach 217.1 million dollars in 2026 and 279.9 million dollars in 2036. Domestic spending is expected to rise to 13.4 billion dollars in 2026 and 16.9 billion dollars in 2036. The tourism sector provided 727,100 jobs in 2025, or 6.1 percent of total employment, compared to 674,700 in 2019. The WTTC forecasts that this number will grow to 749,700 in 2026 and 900,500 in 2036, adding around 150,800 new jobs over the decade.
