A French company known as Bull, which specializes in manufacturing supercomputers, has recently signed two major contracts in Spain and Finland. Based in Angers, France, Bull announced in late August a contract worth nearly 400 million euros with Finland. This deal is expected to support Finland's high-performance computing needs. Separately, Bull also secured a 31 million euro contract with Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), aimed at providing a supercomputing infrastructure. This system will include hardware, software, and ongoing services to ensure continuous monitoring and operation. The new supercomputer for AEMET is designed to enhance the agency's weather forecasting and climate change analysis capabilities. According to the contract, the system should boost performance by 10 percent and significantly improve the agency's ability to process and analyze large volumes of data. These upgrades are expected to lead to more accurate weather predictions and better insights into long-term climate trends. Bull was acquired by the French government from the Atos group at the end of March last year. This acquisition marked a shift in the company's direction, aligning it more closely with national interests in advanced computing technology. The Spanish contract differs from the Finnish one in that it focuses specifically on weather and climate analysis rather than artificial intelligence training, although supercomputers can be used for both purposes. This distinction highlights the varied applications of such powerful computing systems across different sectors.
