Retailleau proposes public debate

Bruno Retailleau of Les Républicains responded to Édouard Philippe of Horizons' proposal to bring together right-wing and centrist leaders in November by suggesting a public debate to confront their convictions and projects. Retailleau emphasized that such a debate would allow the public to see both common ground and differences between candidates.

Retailleau rejects Philippe's proposal

He stated that he does not close the door to dialogue but finds Philippe's proposal not pertinent. In a letter dated October 13, Retailleau argued that the proposed gathering would require candidates to renounce what they believe is right for the country, which he opposes.

Philippe invites leaders for meeting

Philippe had previously invited right-wing and centrist leaders to meet in early November to prepare for the upcoming five-year term. According to an article in Ouest-France, David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes and president of Nouvelle Énergie, stated he would respond to Retailleau's proposal but emphasized that dialogue alone would not resolve the issue of candidate differentiation.

Lisnard supports open primary

Lisnard continues to advocate for an open primary, which Philippe opposes. In Philippe's camp, it is believed that the November meeting is still possible, and some invited candidates may attend. However, there is disagreement about the scope of the meeting, with some in Philippe's circle stating that no one agrees on the boundaries of the discussion.

Attal rejects limited meeting

Gabriel Attal's camp has also rejected the idea of a meeting with just Philippe, Retailleau, and Lisnard. Jean-Louis Borloo proposed to be a "third party" to help bridge the gap between Philippe and Attal. Attal responded positively to Borloo's offer, but according to Le Parisien, the proposal discussed during a meeting of the central bloc's liaison committee has not yet gained universal support.

Retailleau remains resolute

Retailleau also addressed the impact of opinion polls on his determination, stating that they have no effect on his resolve. He emphasized that he has a project of rupture he wants to pursue.
