Tesla has opened lines of credit totaling $30 billion, while it already holds more than $40 billion in cash. The company submitted an official document to the U.S. securities regulator on September 29, revealing three agreements: a $20 billion loan with Citi, which Tesla can draw upon in stages over 18 months, and two credit lines of $8 billion and $2 billion with Wells Fargo, which are essentially large authorized overdrafts. So far, nothing has been borrowed, and the manufacturer does not plan to use these lines of credit in 2026.
Tesla plans more than $25 billion of "capex" in 2026, that is, investment expenses that include factories, machines, and computing centers. This is nearly three times more than in 2025, when they reached $8.53 billion. This money must fund several projects at the same time: the computing power for artificial intelligence, the production of solar cells, and an electronics chip factory conducted with SpaceX, the famous TeraFab. The robotaxi Cybercab, the electric truck Semi, and the humanoid Optimus are also at the center of the manufacturer's activities, which has made a major strategic shift toward AI and robotics to compensate for the decline in car sales.
In the second quarter, Tesla's operations generated $4.7 billion, but the manufacturer invested $5.8 billion. As a result, a negative free cash flow of $1.1 billion. This balance had been positive for at least six quarters. The operating income, which measures current operations, has meanwhile fallen by 57 percent to $398 million. Analysts expect even worse. This flow could reach a deficit of $9.78 billion. If the manufacturer still has a significant advantage with $43.5 billion in liquidity at the end of June, the coming months, or even years, are expected to be more limited.
Garrett Nelson, an analyst at the CFRA firm, estimates that Tesla expects to see much more money leave than come in over the next several years. Elon Musk considers that AI and robots will generate hundreds of billions of dollars for Tesla, enough to justify astronomical expenses today.
