Two Iranians were charged on Friday, October 1st, with suspected involvement in a terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in Manchester, according to British police. The men, Salam Ahmadyan, 36, and Rahman Salehi, 34, were arrested in Manchester on September 20th. They are suspected of communicating with others through encrypted apps to gather materials needed to build a homemade explosive device, acquiring equipment for making or assembling such a device, and scouting locations that could be potential targets. They are set to appear in a London court on Saturday and are currently in provisional detention. According to police, the two men had been in contact with a third party believed to be located in Iran as part of this alleged plot. This development comes one year after a deadly attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in northern Manchester, where two people were killed on October 2nd, 2025, during Yom Kippur services. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood said the charges would be deeply concerning for the Jewish communities in the UK. She noted that one of the men had been granted asylum, while the other had applied for asylum, which is currently under review. She also stated that the country is facing "a whole series of serious threats" from the Iranian regime, which she claims are targeting Jewish communities and using intermediaries to hide their involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham mentioned on Wednesday that there were "strong indications" of Iranian involvement in an incident near a U.S. military base in England on Sunday. A sixth man, a British-Iranian, was arrested in connection with that investigation. On Saturday night into Sunday, police responded to an emergency call about "three suspicious vehicles" near the Fairford base. Iran denied any connection with this case on Monday.
