Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro, powered by the newly released A20 Pro chip, has been tested against Apple's line of Mac computers equipped with M-series chips. The A20 Pro features a 2 nm fabrication process, which allows for more efficient power usage and smaller components. It includes a 6-core CPU with two high-performance cores and a 7-core GPU that offers a 40% improvement in speed over the A19 Pro chip in the previous iPhone 17 Pro. Apple claims the A20 Pro "sets a new benchmark in mobile computing." In benchmark tests using the Geekbench 6 tool, the iPhone 18 Pro outperformed the iPhone 17 Pro in both CPU and GPU performance. The iPhone 17 Pro, however, ranked tenth in multi-core CPU tests, showing that while the new model is faster, it still faces stiff competition from older devices in certain areas. The A20 Pro chip also outperformed the M3 chip in the 2024 MacBook Air 15 M3 and the 13-inch iPad Pro M4, both of which were released in the same year. However, it could not match the graphics performance of the M3 Max chip, which has a fully loaded GPU, or the newer M5 chip. When it comes to CPU performance, the iPhone 18 Pro ranked above the M3 chip in the MacBook Air 15 but was significantly outperformed by devices with M4, M5, and M3 Max chips. These M-series chips are found in Apple’s latest Mac computers and are designed for more complex computing tasks. Despite not reaching the theoretical performance levels of the most powerful Apple computers and tablets, the iPhone 18 Pro still holds the top spot in smartphone comparisons, showing it remains a leader in mobile performance.
