TotalEnergies, a major French energy company, has announced plans to invest nearly $10 billion in Argentina over the next few years. The company's chief executive, Patrick Pouyanné, revealed the details during a visit by Argentine President Javier Milei to Paris. The investment will focus on expanding existing projects rather than starting new ones. TotalEnergies is currently the largest international producer of gas in Argentina.
The investment plan includes approximately $1.5 billion for an offshore gas project in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, where the company is already producing 20 million cubic meters of gas per day. The money will be used to develop and connect underwater wells to the electricity grid. The largest portion of the investment, between $4 and $5 billion, will be used to boost shale gas production in the Neuquén province, aiming to increase output from 14 to 16 million cubic meters per day. An additional $5 billion is earmarked for a "shale oil" project in the same region.
Pouyanné mentioned that TotalEnergies is now capable of producing both shale gas and shale oil in Neuquén. He also expressed interest in expanding wind power in Argentina, where the company has already installed 300 megawatts of wind energy capacity. Pouyanné thanked the Argentine government for its recent economic reforms, which he believes have created a more favorable business environment.
TotalEnergies had previously announced its goal to increase annual gas and oil production by 2 to 3% between 2030 and 2035. The new investments are expected to play a key role in achieving this target, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to Argentina's energy sector.
