Sébastien Volpellière, a local author from the south of France, recently shared his journey into writing during an interview. His first published work was his master's thesis in history, which appeared in a regional review called Sommières et son histoire in 2003. After a long period of writing very little, he found inspiration again through a certification from Sciences Po Paris, a prestigious institution, which was funded by his employer. As part of the program, he had to write a professional note, which was later published in a review. This experience rekindled his passion for writing and led him to begin a new project.
Volpellière’s first novel, Les Initiés des Ténèbres, is a dark psychological thriller that he wrote while staying in a hotel in Paris. He started with just ten lines, then expanded to ten pages, and eventually completed a hundred pages over seven or eight months. The story follows a policeman who has a hidden past as a killer. The plot begins when he recognizes signs of his past at a crime scene, and a genius profiler becomes suspicious of his background. The novel has received positive feedback from readers, some of whom reported having nightmares but still couldn’t put the book down.
Writing the novel involved many re-readings and feedback from professionals, including an editor who played a significant role in refining the manuscript. Volpellière found it challenging to maintain character coherence and to balance descriptive passages with action. Despite these difficulties, he decided to publish the book after receiving encouragement from his editor, who advised him to put the word "end" and launch the book. He chose to sell it through local bookstores in Sommières, as well as at Intermarché stores in Sommières and Lunel, and at Cultura in Nîmes. He has decided not to digitize the book at this time to maintain an eco-friendly approach, though he may consider digital distribution in the future.
The ending of Les Initiés des Ténèbres is open, and Volpellière is considering writing a sequel due to reader interest. He also mentioned that he has another novel ready for release by Christmas, titled Sang hybride. This new work is quite different from his first, featuring a fantastic plot that spans history and will be presented as a family saga with historical and political elements.
