Risk of displacement in winter

Millions of Ukrainians who have returned home after fleeing the war face the risk of being displaced again this winter, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The organization warns that ongoing Russian strikes and other challenges threaten the safety of those who have returned.

Conditions pushing people to leave

Damaged housing, repeated attacks on energy infrastructure, and high heating costs are making it difficult for many families to stay in their homes, the IOM explained. The organization noted that the desire to leave is strongest among those who have returned in the past three months.

Current displacement figures

The IOM estimates that nearly 3.6 million people remain displaced within Ukraine, while about 3.8 million people have returned to their homes since February 2022, when the war began.
