Used electric vehicles are selling faster than ever, with demand rising sharply, according to reports from specialist retailers. Sales of second-hand electric cars have surged by 150 percent compared to the same period last year, as more drivers look for affordable options to transition to electric motoring. Retailers say the time it takes to sell used electric vehicles has nearly halved in some cases. For example, at Car360, a specialist electric-only retailer, the average time to buy, prepare, and resell a used electric car has dropped from 57 days earlier this year to under 30 days. Similarly, Ev Experts, another EV specialist, reports that the time between buying and selling a car has also halved, with some vehicles selling in under 30 days. This rapid turnover reflects a shift in consumer behavior. Many buyers now come to dealers with a clear interest in electric vehicles, having already done their research. James Buxton, chief operating officer of Car360, said, "The days of convincing people to go electric are largely behind us. Most customers have done their research and want expert advice on things like battery health, charging, and which car is right for them." Martin Miller of Ev Experts echoed this sentiment, noting that buyers increasingly know they want an electric car, and the role of dealers is now to help them choose the right model based on their specific needs. Retailers also report very low levels of vehicle returns. Car360 says fewer than two percent of its used electric cars are returned, usually due to practical reasons like a buyer choosing a different size or type of car that better suits their lifestyle. Ev Experts reports no returns at all, highlighting the growing satisfaction with second-hand electric vehicles. The increased demand for used electric cars is also driving growth in the EV leasing sector. Octopus Electric Vehicles, a leading EV leasing company, says demand for its used cars has risen by 150 percent, with more people opting for second-hand models as a more affordable entry point into electric motoring. Newer technology and features, which once only came with new cars, are now available at lower prices in the used market. This trend shows that used electric vehicles are becoming just as popular as new ones, with Octopus CEO Gurjeet Grewal noting that dealers are increasingly embracing electric cars to meet growing customer demand. These developments are being highlighted during Used EV Week, a campaign led by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association. The initiative brings together motor industry businesses to emphasize the growing variety, quality, and value of second-hand electric cars. As newer technology becomes more accessible at used car prices, the appeal of electric vehicles continues to grow, making the transition to electric motoring more achievable for a wider range of drivers.
