Households in Mayotte face rising costs despite stable prices, as fuel and energy prices climb, forcing residents to cut back and seek alternatives.
Household expenses remain high in Mayotte
Daily expenses continue to weigh on the budgets of households in Mayotte, despite price stability in September according to the latest figures from INSEE. Residents report difficulties in finding certain products, with some stores experiencing shortages or long supply times.Rising fuel costs limit spending
The rise in fuel prices further increases the burden on residents. Souf, 36 years old, noted that the cost of a full tank of fuel has increased from 70 euros to 100 euros, leading him to make fewer trips. He limits himself to one or two activities and pleasures per month.Grocery shopping becomes expensive
A young woman at the shopping center spent 139 euros on groceries, stating that even a 20 kg bag of rice and two or three cartons of chicken can quickly increase the bill. She also highlighted the rising cost of electricity, paying 200 euros every two months for utilities, adding that the commune of Mamoudzou has increased the property tax.Higher prices for baby items push some to shop online
The prices of baby clothes have increased significantly, prompting some residents to buy online in the Hexagon and wait for someone to bring their purchases, as items in Mayotte are sometimes three times more expensive. Nadjima, 36 years old, an entrepreneur in Bandraboua and mother of three children, aims to gain autonomy to avoid the high cost of living.Local shopping to avoid fuel costs
Nadjima prefers to buy from small shops near her home, despite the higher prices, to avoid the fuel costs associated with traveling to Mamoudzou or Combani for cheaper items. She and her husband are considering installing solar panels to mitigate the risk of power outages and reduce electricity costs.Energy prices rise in September
In September, energy prices increased by 3%, after an increase of 0.9% in August. This increase is mainly due to that of petroleum products (+4.6%). The liter of diesel has thus increased by 14 cents and that of super fuel by six cents.Food and manufactured goods prices fall slightly
At the same time, food prices decreased by 0.6% in September, after a decline of 0.2% in August. Those of manufactured products have also decreased by 0.3%, particularly in clothing and shoes (-1.2%). Service prices have decreased by 0.5%, mainly due to the seasonal decrease in air transport rates (-21.4%).Annual price increases remain significant
Over a year, between September 2025 and September 2026, consumer prices have increased by 1.6% in Mayotte. The increase reaches 14.1% for energy, with a progress of 20.9% for petroleum products and 2.9% for electricity. Energy represents 8% of the consumption of Mayotte households.National inflation higher than in Mayotte
At the national level, inflation reaches 3.1% over a year, compared to 1.6% in Mayotte. In September 2023, more than a year before the passage of cyclone Chido, consumer prices were already increasing by 4.2% over a year in Mayotte. Food had increased by 7.8% and energy by 17.9%, according to INSEE. The slowdown in inflation does not mean that prices have returned to their previous level, it simply indicates that they are increasing more slowly.
