Lunel faces recurring flood risks

The city of Lunel, built around a lake, frequently suffers from heavy rains that lead to flooding. Recent floods have impacted residents and professionals in the Pont de Vesse neighborhood, highlighting the need for improved flood prevention measures.

Mayor and officials assess damage

Mayor Paulette Gougeon and EPTB Vidourle president Jérôme Boisson visited the affected areas last Wednesday to evaluate the damage and discuss potential solutions. Their visit aimed to understand the extent of the impact and identify necessary actions.

Funding for flood prevention

Lunel Agglo, including the central commune, will benefit from the PAPI 4 plan, which funds concrete actions to reduce water-related risks. This initiative includes the construction of a second-tier dike, which Gougeon believes will protect both Lunel and Marsillargues.

Debate over additional measures

At the Pont-de-Vesse, officials are considering whether to implement further measures, such as retention basins and deeper digging, to manage water flow. The mayor referenced Nîmes, where similar actions resolved flooding issues, suggesting similar steps could help Lunel.

Community solidarity and cleanup efforts

In the wake of the floods, community solidarity has been strong, with many residents and volunteers helping to clean homes and premises. Technical services and Nicollin teams have also begun inventorying damaged items to facilitate recovery efforts.

Request for natural disaster designation

Mayor Gougeon and Boisson recently met with the Hérault prefecture to request an official designation of the event as a natural disaster. This designation would help affected residents and professionals access support and move forward more easily.
