Mayotte's low over-indebtedness rates

The monthly financial inclusion barometer for Mayotte, published at the end of September 2026, shows that the territory has the lowest levels of over-indebtedness among Mayotte, Reunion, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. Mayotte accounts for just 1% of over-indebtedness cases, compared to 48% in Reunion and 28% in Guadeloupe.

Discrepancy in reported figures

Daoulab ALI CHARIF, Head of Economic Services and Communication at IEDOM MAYOTTE, stated that the low over-indebtedness figure may not fully represent the situation. He noted that only 53 cases were filed from January to September 2026, suggesting the program may not be well known or cultural barriers may prevent people from seeking help.

Low use of banking rights in Mayotte

Mayotte also shows the lowest rate of recourse to the right to a banking account, at 4%, compared to 36% in Reunion and 34% in Guadeloupe. Daoulab ALI CHARIF explained that Mayotte is the least banked territory and that people there request the right to a bank account the least.

How the banking right works

The right to a bank account is intended for individuals who try to open an account but cannot, and the central bank intervenes to ensure access. However, Daoulab ALI CHARIF emphasized that people must come to the bank themselves, rather than the bank reaching out to them.

Factors affecting banking access

Daoulab ALI CHARIF suggested that the lack of awareness campaigns and limited internet access for part of the Mahorais population could explain the low use of banking programs. He noted that while cultural factors may explain lower over-indebtedness rates, the low use of the right to a bank account remains unexplained, except for a lack of awareness.
