Travel departures in September 2026 show a decline compared to the same period in 2025, with a 5.5% drop in the number of bookings and a 4.1% decrease in business volume. However, the average spending per booking rose by 1.5%, reaching 1,853 euros. This decline is less severe than in August 2026, when the number of bookings fell by 9%. The Observatory of Travel Activities notes that the activity in September remains down and does not yet indicate a clear change in trend. The changes vary across different travel regions. Long-haul travel is the most affected, with a 14.6% decline in the number of bookings. Medium-haul travel shows a smaller decrease of 2.8%. France experiences a 9.1% drop in bookings but sees a strong increase in average spending, over 10%, which helps keep its business volume slightly above that of September 2025. In the Top 20 destinations for September departures, Spain sees a modest 1.7% increase, while Albania, Montenegro, and Austria show the strongest growth, with increases of 280.6%, 91.5%, and 162.9% respectively. Canada is the only long-haul destination in the top 20 with a significant increase of 23.6%, while the United States sees a sharp decline of 34.6%. Reservations for September show fewer bookings but more value, with a 1.7% decline in the number of files and a 3.3% increase in business volume. This is largely due to a rise in the average spending per booking, which reached 2,004 euros, up 5.1%. The average time between booking and departure also increased, reaching 74 days, a 6% rise from 2025. Medium-haul travel is the main driver of this trend, with a 7.1% increase in bookings and a 10.3% rise in business volume. France, however, sees a 9.4% drop in bookings, but a 16.8% increase in average spending helps its business volume grow by 5.8%. Long-haul travel continues to struggle, with an 8.8% drop in bookings and a 7.6% decrease in business volume, despite a slight rise in average spending. In the Top 20 destinations for September reservations, Spain and Tunisia see notable increases of 10.4% and 6.3% respectively. Egypt, Vietnam, and Finland also show strong growth, with increases of 24.9%, 17.5%, and 23.9% respectively. Albania again leads the way with a 282.7% increase. Conversely, Turkey and Mexico experience declines of 32.2% and 20.9% respectively. Medium-haul travel now accounts for 49.8% of bookings, up from 45.6% a year earlier. The Observatory also notes that travelers are booking their trips earlier, with early bookings making up 30.4% of reservations, compared to 28.6% in September 2025. Late bookings remain the majority at 36%, though they were significantly higher in August at 46%.
