Ghost Rider film set to begin filming in 2027

Ghost Rider, a Marvel Studios film directed by Shawn Levy, is set to begin filming in New York in 2027, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter citing sources close to the project. The film was announced in July at the San Diego Comic-Con and is considered a major undertaking for Marvel.

Marvel shifting from digital to film

The Ghost Rider film marks a departure from Marvel Studios’ usual reliance on digital cameras and green screens, a technique Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has used to build the Marvel universe. This new project is stepping outside of that digital framework for the first time in years.

Last Marvel film on film was in 2011

The last Marvel Studios film shot on 35 mm film was Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and Captain America: First Avenger in 2011. Since then, the studio has primarily used digital cameras, such as the Arri Alexa, and relied heavily on green screens and visual effects.

Advocates for film in Hollywood

Linus Sandgren, a film advocate and cinematographer known for La La Land and First Man, is one of the most outspoken advocates of film in Hollywood. He also convinced Denis Villeneuve to switch to film for Dune 3, including in IMAX 65 mm. His influence may be behind Marvel’s decision to use film for Ghost Rider.

Ryan Gosling to play Johnny Blaze

Ryan Gosling is expected to play Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stuntman who sold his soul to the devil, although Marvel has not officially specified which version of the character he will portray. The film’s use of silver film will create a darker, grainier image, enhancing the character’s supernatural elements.
