From September 24 to October 8, Lire et faire lire is restarting its campaign to recruit volunteers through social media. Founded in 1999, the organization connects readers aged 50 and older with children between 0 and 12 years old in educational, cultural, and social institutions. The program involves reading aloud sessions with two main goals: to share a love of books and to create intergenerational connections. This new campaign aims to reinforce this network of readers, which is crucial for increasing opportunities for children to engage with books across the country. Those interested in joining the program are guided by departmental coordinators, who help connect volunteers with the institutions where they will work.
The return of the campaign also brings back Je lis la science, an initiative launched in 2016 to introduce children aged 8 to 10 to scientific questions and encourage critical thinking through reading. This year, the program is taking place during Fête de la science, a national event held from October 2 to 12, 2026. Sixty-seven coordinators will each receive five "science bags," making a total of 335 bags. Each bag contains four books and a guide for volunteers to help them lead the sessions.
This year's Fête de la science has the theme "Saveurs savantes," which combines the idea of flavors with scientific curiosity. The 2026 book selection includes a mix of documentary fiction, biography, nonfiction, and science fiction. Some of the featured titles are La bonne idée de Monsieur Johnson by Pierre Grosz and Rémi Saillard (La Cabane bleue), Wangari Maathai, la femme qui plantait des millions d'arbres by Franck Prévot and Aurélia Fronty (Rue du monde), Génial végétal by Fleur Daugey and Marcel Barelli (La Martinière jeunesse), and La planète interdite by Yves Grevet (Syros). These books use topics like ecology, biodiversity, citizen initiatives, and planetary preservation as entry points into science and literature.
The initiative aims to make scientific themes more accessible and engaging for children through storytelling and intergenerational interaction. By connecting volunteers with young readers, the program hopes to inspire a new generation of curious minds and lifelong learners.
