A driver is set to face court charges after a severe crash that resulted in six fatalities. Christopher Cockell, 50, from Gresford Close in Woolley Grange, has been charged with six counts of causing death by dangerous driving. The incident occurred on the A61, a busy road with a 50mph (80 km/h) speed limit, on 21 July 2024. The crash involved a family car and a motorcycle, leading to a fiery collision that trapped all occupants inside the burning vehicle. The victims included parents Shannen Morgan and Shane Roller, along with their daughters Rubie, 9, and Lillie, 4. The family's silver Ford Focus collided head-on with a BMW motorcycle being ridden by Christopher and Janine Barton, a couple from Barnsley. The collision happened as the motorcycle was attempting to overtake another vehicle on the single-carriageway road. According to an inquest at Wakefield Coroner's Court, the force of the impact caused the car to spin off the road and catch fire. Paramedics at the scene pronounced all four occupants dead. The tragedy left an 11-year-old girl, Poppie, without her entire family. A GoFundMe page set up in her name stated, "We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts and a plea for help. On 21st July 2024, a tragic car accident took the lives of Poppie's entire family - her loving mum, dad, and two little sisters. At just 11 years old, Poppie has lost her whole world in an instant." Superintendent Alan Travis of Wakefield District Police described the incident as "an absolutely tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of six lives." The police are working with the families of the deceased and have closed the A61 between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane. They are also appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information that might help with the ongoing investigation.
