Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers shot and killed Zimran Canas outside his Boyle Heights home after he approached them with a tree trimmer, according to reports. The incident occurred on Monday around 10 a.m. local time when officers were called to Canas' residence in Boyle Heights, a neighborhood located east of downtown Los Angeles. The situation arose after a family member reported that Canas had a mental illness and was armed with a "metal pipe." When officers arrived at the scene, Canas exited from a front gate holding an approximately 8-foot pole with a 12-inch serrated blade attached to the end. According to the LAPD, officers ordered Canas to drop the tree trimmer, but he refused and approached one of the officers with the blade pointed toward them. This led to an officer-involved shooting. LAPD Captain Mike Bland told local news outlet KABC that officers gave Canas clear commands to drop the item, but he continued to advance toward them. Officers tried to move their position, but Canas did not comply with their directives to drop the item and surrender. Canas collapsed to the ground, and officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. No one else, including the officers, was injured during the incident. The LAPD has recovered the metal pipe and pole with the serrated blade and has booked them as evidence. The Force Investigation Division is currently looking into the incident. As part of the investigation, officers involved will be interviewed, along with any body-worn camera footage and other available video from the area. Captain Bland also mentioned that interviews with other people present at the scene will be conducted. The Independent has contacted the LAPD for further comment, but no additional information has been provided yet.
