New restrictions on mobility devices on trains

Starting December 13, 2026, certain bicycles, fatbikes, and large electric scooters will be banned from TGV Inoui and Intercités trains. The ban also includes hoverboards and gyropodes, but not single-wheeled gyroroues.

Reasons for the ban

SNCF cites safety concerns, overcrowding, and the need to maintain train punctuality as the main reasons for the new restrictions. The company says these devices can complicate passenger movement and boarding processes.

Specific size limits for bicycles

The new rules prohibit bicycles that exceed standard dimensions, such as those longer than 185 cm or with tires wider than 6 cm. This includes larger fatbikes and electric scooters that do not meet these size limits.

Existing list of prohibited bicycles

The list of banned bicycles was already long, including recumbent bikes, tricycles, tandems, cargo bikes, and trailers. Passengers must pay a 10-euro fee to use designated spaces for bicycles, or they can transport them for free if folded or disassembled.

Electric scooters face new limits

Non-foldable electric scooters with more than two wheels and tire widths exceeding 6 cm will no longer be allowed. Foldable scooters must fit within specific size limits when packed, and a transport bag is recommended for easier handling.

Safety concerns with lithium batteries

Many of these devices use lithium batteries, which can pose fire risks if they fail. SNCF emphasizes that charging batteries on board is prohibited, regardless of whether they are attached to a device or not.
