Isle of Reveries is an action-adventure and reflection game in the heroic fantasy style, released on the Nintendo Switch eShop on September 4, 2026, at a price of 17.99 €. The development is handled by desertcucco, an independent studio that with this project signs a title focused on adventure and exploration. It stems from a Kickstarter launched on March 1, 2025, which successfully completed its campaign. The publishing was handled by Electric Airship, created in 2023, an independent structure responsible for the distribution of the title on consoles and PC for JRPG. They have a parent structure called Penguin Pop Games. The game opens with two characters discussing their mother's theories about the origin of the stars at the top of a roof. After this exchange, you suddenly wake up. You play as Lief, an anthropomorphic owl on a pilgrimage to the Isle of Reveries, a forgotten land perched in the skies. Accompanied by other pilgrims who wish to fulfill their most cherished wish, you reach the sanctuary after many trials. Reality catches up with you: nearly all of your companions perish as you progress. Only Clem, an ambitious but timid frog, survives and leaves you to proceed alone. There, the goddess gives you part of her power in the form of a fairy, you face a monster blocking access to the goddess's statue. Before the deity, you learn that the region is corrupted by the sum of selfish wishes formulated by previous visitors. To restore harmony, you must purify four distinct places. A difficult choice presents itself to you: fulfill your personal wish or renounce your pilgrimage to repair the world. The story of Isle of Reveries is particularly well crafted and reimagines the codes of Zelda in a much darker atmosphere. The plot addresses deep topics, such as the devastating impact of wishes on others or the complex relationship between Lief and his brother. However, the story has many pauses during the adventure. If the narrative progresses mainly in large steps during the dungeons, there are apparently innocuous dialogues and clues scattered in the environment that also tell part of the world you are exploring. This story is also directly embodied in the gameplay. You develop a village by welcoming NPCs who have become shadows of themselves, sacrificed because of the wishes of others. Their offbeat exchanges provide a real breath of fresh air, while also providing precious clues or materials for your quest. Only drawback: the level of language. The game is only available in English and offers a rather demanding writing, marked by recherché expressions and philosophical reflections. Although the whole remains generally accessible, an insufficient level of English will make progression more difficult and prevent you from fully enjoying the title. You play as an awkward owl who barely knows how to jump, launched into his pilgrimage without any preparation. The controls remain simple: move, jump, talk to NPCs and assign your items to buttons B, Y and X, while keeping an eye on your adventure menu. The interface displays three hearts of life at the beginning and an endurance gauge that is consumed according to the tool used. Having started with empty hands, you must equip yourself on the go. You quickly recover a sword for combat, a lamp to light up the darkness or burn obstacles, and a camera to identify enemies. The influence of the Zelda saga is felt: the sword remains classic, the lamp recalls ancient iterations of the green-hatted hero by lighting everything it touches and the camera functions a bit like in Breath of the Wild. Your arsenal expands later thanks to treasures scattered on the map and major objects of each dungeon. Although these initial tools have a familiar feel, the game reappropriates the mechanics by later offering much more original equipment. Only the jump proves more difficult to grasp. It suffers from a very slight delay between the button press and the action on screen, which sometimes causes involuntary falls. Holes remain the most frustrating trap: in case of a failed jump or if you get too close, they suck Lief in like a black hole, leaving you to watch him slowly get pulled in to lose half a heart.
