Belgian cartoonist Philippe Geluck has announced the relaunch of his Cat Museum, which will be renamed the "Museum of the Cat and Funny Art" and is set to open in 2028. The museum will be located in a former 19th-century porcelain factory in the Ixelles district of Brussels, near the European Parliament. This location was chosen after the original plan, which was to be in the capital's tourist center near the Royal Palace, was abandoned due to financial challenges. The new site is a heritage building with a colorful ceramic-decorated façade, adding to its historical charm.
During a press conference, Geluck shared that the museum will span 2,300 square meters and will feature the Cat in various artistic forms, including sketches, paintings, and sculptures. The museum will also explore the history of the animal from ancient Egypt to its role in modern internet culture. A portion of the space will be dedicated to temporary exhibitions celebrating famous figures in humorous drawing, such as Sempé, Siné, and Kroll, a well-known Belgian artist in the field of press illustration.
The project is estimated to cost around two million euros, fully funded by private investors. This is significantly less than the original plan, which was to be a joint effort with the Brussels-Capital region and had an estimated cost of up to seven million euros. Geluck explained that the initial collaboration with the region had to be abandoned due to rising costs and unexpected delays over the past decade. The original building, selected in 2015, saw renovation costs increase from 4.5 million to seven million euros.
Architect Francis Metzger, who is overseeing the project, mentioned that urban planning permits must still be submitted and that the renovation will involve extensive work. Geluck hopes the museum will become a lively cultural hub, especially given its location near other museums and the Matongé neighborhood, which is home to a large Congolese diaspora community. The museum aims to attract both local and international visitors, offering a unique blend of art, humor, and feline history.
