Agnieszka Szpila’s new collection of five stories, titled Octopussy, delves into themes of postporno and ecological feminism. Published by Éditions Noir sur Blanc, the book presents a fantastical world where a woman is born with eight vaginas, setting the stage for a narrative that blurs the lines between realism and imagination. Szpila crafts a universe filled with fantasy, humor, and sexuality, firmly placing her work within the postporno category. This term refers to a literary and artistic movement that challenges traditional pornography by rethinking how bodies and sexualities are represented, aiming to reclaim creative control from commercial industries. Through her stories, Szpila questions the rigid categories society uses to judge and understand bodies. She suggests that what is often labeled as "pathological" can also be seen as beautiful and unique, challenging established norms. The distinctions between normal and abnormal, ugly and beautiful, or desirable and repulsive are shown to be fluid and ever-changing. By bringing attention to bodies typically excluded from public discourse, the collection takes on a strong political edge, weaving social issues into its narratives. In this context, the body is not just something to be looked at—it becomes a space for exploring power and envisioning a transformed world. Szpila’s work goes beyond human-centered perspectives, incorporating animals, mythical creatures, and the natural environment as integral characters. Humans gradually relinquish their role as dominant figures, shifting from masters of nature to participants in a broader, interconnected living system. This approach aligns with ecofeminist ideas, which link the domination of bodies to the exploitation of natural resources and living beings. The ecological message raises important questions: how can we imagine a world where the boundaries between human, animal, plant, and other creatures are no longer clear-cut? And how can we write about a world where climate change is reshaping our relationship with the environment? The concept of hybridity is central to Octopussy, highlighting a key trend in contemporary literature. As societies undergo transformation—whether in social, political, or environmental contexts—writing styles and forms also evolve. Reading Szpila’s work offers a celebration of this evolving literary landscape, showing how new forms of storytelling can reflect and respond to the complexities of our changing world.
