Child found dead in school bus

A 7-year-old child was found dead inside a school bus in French Guiana on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The vehicle had completed its service and returned to its depot several hours earlier.

Location and background

The boy lived in Sainte-Rose-de-Lima, a village located in the commune of Matoury, near Cayenne. He was enrolled at an elementary school in the same commune. The precise circumstances of his death have not yet been established.

Initial findings

According to Guyane La 1ère, the child was found dehydrated and showed signs of rigor mortis. An investigation is underway to understand the sequence of events and determine any potential responsibilities.

Transportation system failures

During a press conference held after the incident, the Community of the Coastal Center (CACL), responsible for organizing school transportation in six communes, acknowledged several failures. "We have identified a series of malfunctions," said its president, Sandra Trochimara.

Lack of monitoring system

One element must be clarified. The vehicles used for school transportation are usually equipped with a system allowing children to badge in. However, this system was not present in the bus in question, due to a change of vehicle. This device, however, is not the only way to verify the presence of students.

Staff responsibilities

Accompanying staff are normally responsible for supervising the children during the journey and counting them. The investigation must therefore determine when the boy should have been noticed and how his presence could have gone unnoticed.

Precautionary measures

In light of the gravity of the facts, the CACL immediately took precautionary measures. The service provided on this school transport line has been suspended.

Previous incidents

Isabelle Patient, director of Housing, Planning and Mobility at the CACL, also indicated that it had previously happened that children were left in school buses. However, such a situation had never had such a dramatic outcome.

Support for school community

The school attended by the young boy remains open. However, psychological support has been put in place to assist the students and staff who have been affected by this tragedy, announced Serge Smock, mayor of Matoury and vice-president of the CACL in charge of mobility.

Investigation priorities

The investigations must now precisely reconstruct the child's journey, the checks carried out on board and the circumstances in which the bus was returned to the depot without his presence being detected. They must also allow the responsibilities in this tragedy to be established.
