PostgreSQL 19 is now in beta, offering a range of new features and performance improvements for users of this popular open-source relational database system. This version introduces support for property graph queries through SQL/PGQ, a new REPACK command that helps free up disk space and reorganize table content, and enhanced logical replication. It also includes performance boosts in areas such as foreign key checks and automatic scaling of I/O worker processes, along with new optimizations at both the planning and execution stages of queries. PostgreSQL, often referred to as Postgres, is a free and open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). It is based on the relational data model introduced by E. F. Codd in 1970, which organizes data into tables with rows and columns. RDBMSs like PostgreSQL allow users to interact with data using SQL, a standard language for querying and updating databases. PostgreSQL emphasizes extensibility and strict SQL compliance, supporting features such as ACID transactions, triggers, stored procedures, and views. It runs on major operating systems and is used for a wide range of applications, from small individual systems to large data warehouses and web services. PostgreSQL 19’s REPACK command combines the benefits of existing commands like VACUUM FULL and CLUSTER, allowing users to reorganize tables and free up disk space without interrupting read and write operations. The CONCURRENTLY option in REPACK enables this process to run without blocking database activity. Logical replication has also been improved, allowing the replication of sequence values and enabling changes without restarting the server when the wal_level parameter is set to replica. Additionally, autovacuum can now use parallel worker processes to clean up indexes, and a new rating system helps prioritize which tables need cleaning or analysis most urgently. Other notable features in PostgreSQL 19 include the ability to enable or disable data checksums while the server is running, a new WAIT FOR command that supports "read-your-writes" query patterns on standby servers, and support for updating or deleting temporal data using the FOR PORTION OF clause. Two new extensions, pg_plan_advice and pg_stash_advice, provide tools to stabilize and apply query planning recommendations automatically. These enhancements, along with performance improvements in I/O scaling and query execution, make PostgreSQL 19 a significant upgrade for developers and database administrators.
