A 20-year-old Spanish co-pilot, Soraya Barreiro, died Saturday during the Rallye Villa de Llanes after her vehicle caught fire in an accident. The BMW 325i, driven by her teammate German Romano, was involved in a serious crash that led to the vehicle quickly catching fire. Barreiro was trapped inside the car and could not escape despite the efforts of emergency responders and firefighters. The organizers of the Rallye Villa de Llanes canceled the remainder of the event following the incident. The rally was the penultimate round of the Spanish Rally Championship, held west of Bilbao. According to Spanish media, the BMW 325i caught fire after going off the road. While Romano managed to exit the vehicle and was transported to the hospital in Arriondas (Asturias), Barreiro remained inside the car. The intervention of emergency services and firefighters could not prevent Barreiro, who was participating in her second race after making her debut in March, from dying in the flames. This tragedy occurred during the El Mazucu special stage, prompting the organizers to issue a statement announcing the cancellation of the remaining timed stages. "We have made the irrevocable decision to suspend all remaining timed stages definitively," the organizers said. "This difficult and painful decision was made in a spirit of deep sadness and absolute respect. In these moments of immense mourning for the entire motorsport community, we believe that competition no longer holds any importance." All participants observed a minute of silence in honor of Barreiro. In 2021, Spanish drivers Jaime Gil and Diego Calvo also died during the Rallye Villa de Llanes after losing control of their Seat Panda during the race. "Since I was a child, I have been obsessed with racing and I know perfectly well that the sport we practice, Soraya and I, carries many risks," posted driver José Antonio Suarez on social media Sunday. "But every time a tragedy like this touches me personally, my heart is broken."
