Nick Kyrgios, a 31-year-old Australian tennis player, has completed a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine. The ban began on 4 August, following a drug test taken during the Mallorca Open in June, which detected benzoylecgonine, a chemical byproduct of cocaine. Kyrgios admitted to using cocaine at a nightclub in Magaluf on 20 June, two days before he played in the first round of the Mallorca tournament, where he lost to his countryman Adam Walton. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which oversees anti-doping policies in tennis, accepted that the drug use occurred outside of competition after consulting with an independent expert. Kyrgios could have faced a three-month ban, but it was reduced to one month after he entered a treatment program. Kyrgios, who has fallen to 918 in the world rankings, will lose 6,570 euros in prize money from the Mallorca Open. When the positive test was announced, he said he would take a 28-day break from social media and public life to focus on his personal well-being. Over the past few years, Kyrgios has struggled with injuries, including knee and wrist problems, which have limited his play. He last competed in men's doubles at Wimbledon, where he and his partner Alexander Bublik lost in the first round. Kyrgios has also spoken publicly about the mental and physical toll of his injuries, saying that coming to terms with the end of his career has been more difficult than he expected. Kyrgios has been a controversial figure in tennis for years, known for his on-court behavior, including smashing rackets, making loud obscenities, and arguing with umpires. In 2023, he admitted to assaulting an ex-girlfriend, though he avoided a criminal conviction. He has also faced criticism for making misogynistic comments and for sharing content from controversial influencer Andrew Tate in 2024, though he later claimed to have distanced himself from Tate. Kyrgios was also critical of the handling of anti-doping cases involving top players Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, calling the situations "disgusting" for tennis. Despite his controversies, Kyrgios has had a successful career, winning seven ATP Tour singles titles and reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He also won the Australian Open men's doubles title in 2022 with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kyrgios has spoken openly about his mental health struggles, including saying he "genuinely contemplated" suicide after losing at Wimbledon in 2019 and spending time in a psychiatric hospital in London. His recent suspension adds another chapter to a career marked by both talent and turbulence.
