Daisy Edgar-Jones, who portrays Elinor Dashwood in the new film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, says she relates to her character’s thoughtful and rational approach to love. In an interview with the BBC, Edgar-Jones explained that she often relies on logic rather than emotion when it comes to romantic relationships. However, she also noted that the film allowed her to explore a more passionate and expressive side of herself. The movie, directed by Georgia Oakley, follows the Dashwood sisters as they face challenges related to love, loss, and the rigid expectations of their society after their father’s death. Edgar-J Jones is best known for her role in the popular TV series Normal People, but she is now stepping into a lead role in this classic adaptation. She described the film as a traditional take on Austen’s work, yet it brings a fresh perspective through its filmmaking style. She stars alongside Esmé Creed-Miles, who plays her sister Marianne. Creed-Miles said she identifies more with Marianne’s emotional nature than Elinor’s rational one, which can sometimes be frustrating. The two actors previously worked together on the 2018 film Pond Life. Edgar-Jones mentioned that the theme of sisterhood in the film deeply resonated with her, even though she is an only child in real life. She noted that the film has inspired some viewers to desire a sister or reconnect with their existing ones. She also highlighted the continued relevance of Jane Austen’s stories, saying that Austen has a unique ability to express the female experience. She pointed out that Austen wrote about modern dating issues—such as situationships and ghosting—long before these terms were commonly used. This connection, she believes, helps today’s younger audiences, particularly Gen Z, relate to Austen’s work. The new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility will be released in UK cinemas on 25 September. Edgar-Jones also commented on her former co-star Paul Mescal, who has been linked to the role of James Bond. She expressed confidence in Mescal’s abilities and said she would support him if he were to take on the iconic role.
