Motorola introduced its Android 17 beta in February 2026, just days after Google released the operating system, making it one of the first phone manufacturers to offer the stable version of Android 17. The update initially became available for the Edge 2025 and Signature series of devices, with future updates planned for the Razr, Edge, and Moto G models. This update is part of a broader trend among manufacturers to quickly adopt the latest Android versions, often adding their own custom features and improvements. Android 17 brings several new features aimed at improving security and user experience. For example, it includes a feature that scans SMS, MMS, and RCS messages for phishing attempts, helping users avoid scams. The phone can also lock itself after multiple failed attempts to authenticate, adding an extra layer of security. Another key addition is the ability to use Quick Share via QR codes, which allows users to send photos to contacts on iOS devices or even from a browser, making file sharing more versatile across platforms. The update also introduces customization options for the lock screen, such as personalized typography, widget frames, fonts, and shortcuts. Visual search, known as Circle to Search, now includes real-time on-screen translation, which could be especially useful for travelers or users communicating in multiple languages. Additional features include stackable widgets, resizable quick settings, better-organized notifications, and a new interface around the front camera sensor that resembles Apple’s Dynamic Island, offering live updates and interactive elements. Motorola’s user interface, Hello UI, continues to support its signature gestures, such as the double wrist flick to activate the flashlight. The Moto Qira assistant, which is also being extended to Android 17, adds voice-activated features for users. In collaboration with GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused Android variant, Motorola is enhancing privacy features within the update. The rollout of Android 17 is happening in regional batches, with newer models like the Signature and Razr series receiving the update first, while older Moto G models may not get it until 2027. Users can check their eligibility for the update in their device’s Settings under System and Software Updates.
