A Scottish grandmother has been named the world's oldest female Fortnite streamer by Guinness World Records. Cath Bowie, 78, who goes by the online name grumpygran1948, began playing Fortnite in 2017 after her teenage grandson introduced her to the game. Today, she has around 24,000 followers and is featured in the upcoming Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2027. Fortnite is a popular online video game where players compete in a battle royale format, building structures and fighting to be the last one standing. Bowie said she had tried other video games before but found her true passion in Fortnite. "I had at last found a game for me," she said. "I call myself a Fortniter more than a gamer." She enjoys the social aspects of the game and the daily challenges it presents, playing it every day. Her grandson initially doubted she would gain a following if she started streaming. "As a young guy, he just couldn’t believe that his grandma would do such a thing and suggested that nobody would join me or watch me," she said. "Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it. Twenty-four thousand-plus followers later and he doesn’t mention it. I wonder why?" Bowie's determination led to her success, proving that age is not a barrier to engaging with new technologies and communities. Bowie expressed gratitude for being recognized in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2027, calling it a distant goal she never thought she would achieve. She thanked her family and friends for their support over the years. She also encouraged others not to let anyone tell them they are too old to start gaming. Alice Bell, editor of the Gamer’s Edition, said the publication highlights the creativity and achievements in modern video games and aims to inspire more people to join the gaming community.
